Oral histories from German soldiers who defended the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944.

The Verdict

Almost every account of D-Day looks up the beach; this one looks down it, from behind the German guns. Presented as oral histories of the soldiers who manned the Atlantic Wall on 6 June 1944, it offers the rare sensation of the landings seen from the defenders' side — the horror of the naval bombardment, the endless craft emerging from the smoke, the strange detachment of men doing their duty in a cause already lost. Gripping and unusual, it comes with a serious caveat about how much of it can be trusted.

Who Should Read It

Read it if you want

  • D-Day seen from the German defences
  • A rare defender's-eye perspective
  • The terror of the Allied bombardment from the receiving end
  • A short, vivid, unusual angle

Look elsewhere if you want

  • A documented, verifiable history
  • The Allied side of the landings
  • Strategy or the wider campaign

Why We Rated It 4.1

4.1

The unusual perspective is genuinely compelling, but the rating is held down by real doubts about authenticity, set out below — read it with those firmly in mind. How we rate →

Historical Context

D-Day Through German Eyes (2015) presents itself as interviews with German soldiers who defended the Normandy beaches, said to have been conducted by a wartime journalist and later edited by his grandson, Holger Eckhertz.

Criticisms & Debates

The provenance of these accounts is disputed: there is little independent record of the author, the supposed interviewer, or the veterans quoted, and some readers and historians suspect the testimony is partly or wholly invented. Treat the German voices as unverified — possibly authentic, possibly constructed — rather than as documented history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is D-Day Through German Eyes reliable?
Its authenticity is questioned — the sourcing cannot be independently confirmed, so it is best treated as unverified rather than documentary.
What makes it worth reading anyway?
The defender's-eye view of the landings is rare and vivid; just hold it at arm's length as history.
