Two parachutists are sent to kill Reinhard Heydrich, the architect of the Final Solution — while the author argues with himself about inventing any of it.

The Verdict

Two Czechoslovak parachutists were sent to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, the cold technocrat at the heart of the Final Solution — and Laurent Binet cannot stop interrupting his own account to ask whether he has any right to novelise it. HHhH tells the story of Operation Anthropoid as a tense, propulsive thriller while simultaneously arguing with itself about invented dialogue, imagined weather, and the ethics of turning real martyrs into characters. The double game sounds clever-clever; in practice it is gripping and oddly moving, a book about how we dare to tell history at all.

Who Should Read It

Read it if you want

  • The assassination of Heydrich, told two ways at once
  • Fiction that questions itself
  • Operation Anthropoid as thriller and meditation
  • Something formally unlike anything else here

Look elsewhere if you want

  • A straight historical account (try a narrative history)
  • A seamless, uninterrupted narrative
  • A conventional novel or a conventional history

Why We Rated It 4.4

The metafictional device wins some readers and irritates others, and that split is exactly what keeps an otherwise dazzling book a notch below the top. How we rate →

Historical Context

HHhH (2010) recounts Operation Anthropoid, the 1942 assassination of Reinhard Heydrich — a principal architect of the Holocaust — by Czechoslovak agents, while the narrator openly debates the ethics and accuracy of fictionalising real events. The title abbreviates a German phrase meaning 'Himmler's brain is called Heydrich.' It won the Prix Goncourt du Premier Roman.
