Geoffrey Wellum flew Spitfires in the Battle of Britain at eighteen — barely trained, frequently terrified — and wrote his account decades later, for himself, with no eye on publication. What emerges is the opposite of the dashing-ace cliche: exhaustion, fear, the slow erosion of a very young man flown past his limit. It is vivid on the joy of flight and merciless about its price.
