Captain Corelli's Mandolin

Louis de Bernières ·1994 ·437 pages ·★ 4.2WarBooks rating
Historical Fiction Intermediate Fictional
🌍 Multi-Perspective

An Italian officer garrisons a Greek island with a mandolin and falls in love — until Italy surrenders and his German allies turn their guns.

The Verdict

Louis de Bernières wrapped one of the war's least-known atrocities inside a lush, funny, digressive love story, and the collision is the point. On a Greek island under a genial Italian occupation, a music-loving officer and a local woman fall in love — until Italy switches sides in 1943 and the island's German allies turn on their former comrades, murdering thousands. The novel's charm curdles deliberately into horror. Enormously popular and genuinely moving, it is also, in its portrait of the wartime Greek left, one of the war's more contested pieces of fiction.

Historical Context

Captain Corelli's Mandolin (1994) is set on the Greek island of Cephalonia under Italian and then German occupation, culminating in the 1943 massacre of the Italian Acqui Division by German forces after Italy's surrender. It was a major bestseller and was filmed in 2001.

Criticisms & Debates

The novel drew sharp criticism in Greece for its unsympathetic portrayal of the wartime Greek communist resistance (ELAS), which critics called distorted and unfair. The Cephalonia massacre it centres on is historical; the depiction of the Greek left is where the controversy lies.
