🌍 Multi-Perspective

A burned man in a ruined Italian villa, a Canadian nurse, a Sikh sapper, and a thief — four lives wrecked by the desert war.

The Verdict

The war here is mostly aftermath — a burned, unidentifiable man in a bombed Italian villa, the nurse who will not leave him, a Sikh sapper defusing the country's hidden bombs, and a thief with ruined hands — but it presses on every page. Michael Ondaatje writes the desert exploration and the doomed love affair at the story's centre as something closer to poetry than narrative, circling memory and identity rather than marching through them. Dense, allusive, and ravishing, it was voted the best of the Booker winners for a reason. As much a prose-poem as a novel.

Why We Rated It 4.4

4.4

Its difficulty cuts both ways: the elliptical, poetic method that earns its acclaim also limits its reach, and that is the trade-off reflected in the rating. How we rate →

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The English Patient a war novel?
Obliquely — it is set at the war's end and shaped by it, but it is more concerned with memory, identity, and aftermath than with combat.
How does the book compare to the film?
The novel is more fragmented and interior; the film streamlines its romance, while the book lingers on the sapper's story and the desert.
