Nicholas Monsarrat served in the corvettes and frigates that escorted the Atlantic convoys, and The Cruel Sea is the war of those small, heaving ships — the cold, the tedium, the sudden horror, the impossible choices between rescuing survivors and hunting the U-boat still beneath them. It is the mirror image of Das Boot: the hunters rather than the hunted, and just as harrowing. The sea, in the title, is the real enemy.

Historical Context
The Battle of the Atlantic — the long struggle to keep Britain supplied against German U-boats — ran the length of the war and was, in Churchill's account, the thing that most frightened him. Monsarrat served as an RNVR officer in convoy escorts; the corvette Compass Rose and the frigate Saltash of the novel are drawn from that experience. A celebrated film followed in 1953.
