The Bataan Death March and its aftermath, told through one American POW — and, unusually, his Japanese captors.

The Verdict

The fullest account of the Bataan Death March ever written — and a rare one that looks honestly at the captors as well as the captured. Michael and Elizabeth Norman spent a decade on it, following one American POW through the surrender, the march, and the camps, while drawing on extensive Japanese interviews to explain how an army came to commit an atrocity. The result neither excuses nor flattens; it reconstructs the horror in human terms from both sides. Patient, harrowing, and essential.

Why We Rated It 4.6

4.6

Research and moral seriousness stand out. Its dual perspective is unusual and valuable, though the material is relentlessly grim. How we rate →
