The most comprehensive account of Pearl Harbor ever written — planning, attack, and aftermath from both sides.

The Verdict

The book that answered, once and for all, how Pearl Harbor happened. Gordon Prange spent the better part of his life on it — interviewing the Japanese planners and the American survivors, reconstructing the attack hour by hour from both sides of the ocean. The result, completed by his students after his death, is monumental: not a polemic about blame but a patient, exhaustive account of how a surprise of that magnitude was conceived, executed, and missed. It remains the standard work, the foundation everything later builds on.

Historical Context

The attack of 7 December 1941 crippled the US Pacific Fleet's battleship line and brought the United States into the war. Prange, a historian who had worked in occupied Japan, drew on decades of interviews with surviving Japanese planners and American participants. He died in 1980; the book was completed and published in 1981 by his collaborators Donald Goldstein and Katherine Dillon.
