Three soldiers — two American, one German — converge across the whole war toward a single clearing in Bavaria.

The Verdict

Irwin Shaw did something unusual for an American novelist in 1948: he gave a German soldier equal standing with his GIs. The Young Lions tracks three men — two Americans and an Austrian ski instructor turned Wehrmacht soldier — across the whole war until their paths cross in a single Bavarian clearing. Shaw, who landed in Normandy himself, writes the moral descent of his German with as much care as the awakening of his Americans, and the result is a broad, humane, unfashionably ambitious novel about how decent men are bent by the war that owns them.

Why We Rated It 4.3

4.3

The ambition of its dual perspective and its scope earn a strong rating; some 1940s conventions have dated, holding it a step below the era's best. How we rate →
