The Verdict
James Bradley followed Flags of Our Fathers with a far darker Pacific story, one the record had quietly buried. Nine American airmen were shot down over the tiny island of Chichi Jima in 1944; one was rescued by a submarine and lived to become President, and the other eight were captured, executed, and in several cases cannibalised by their Japanese captors. Bradley reconstructs the atrocity and its postwar trials without flinching, and sets it inside a wider, provocative meditation on how ordinary men on both sides are led to savagery.
