Lyudmila Pavlichenko, history's deadliest female sniper with 309 kills, is sent from the Sevastopol trenches to tour America with Eleanor Roosevelt.

The Verdict

The improbable thing about this novel is how little of it Kate Quinn had to invent. Lyudmila Pavlichenko was a real Soviet sniper credited with over three hundred kills, pulled out of the Sevastopol trenches and sent to tour the United States as a propaganda celebrity, where she struck up a friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt. Quinn dramatises both halves — the trench war and the strange American spotlight — drawing closely on Pavlichenko's own memoir. The result is the Soviet women's war delivered to a bestseller audience, more faithful to the record than its premise suggests.

Why We Rated It 4.4

4.4

The strength of the true material, and Quinn's skill in shaping it, set the level; some invented thriller scaffolding keeps it, like her other novels, just short of the top. How we rate →
