The classic minute-by-minute narrative of the Battle of Midway, built from hundreds of participant interviews.

The Verdict

This is the legend that Shattered Sword would later take apart — and it is still a thrilling read. Walter Lord wrote the popular account of Midway while the airmen of both fleets were alive to tell it, and his gift was orchestration: dozens of small human moments, a few decisive minutes, the sense of a battle balanced on luck and nerve. Modern scholarship has corrected its emphasis on miracle and chance, but as the dramatic, you-are-there telling that fixed Midway in the public imagination, it has never been bettered.

Who Should Read It

Read it if you want

  • The dramatic, human story of Midway
  • Momentum and tension
  • The battle as it was understood for a generation
  • A perfect counterpart to read against Shattered Sword

Look elsewhere if you want

  • The corrected, records-based account (read Shattered Sword)
  • Japanese carrier doctrine in technical depth
  • Analysis over narrative

Why We Rated It 4.4

4.4

We rate it as the finest popular telling of the Midway legend, while flagging that its 'miracle' framing has been revised. Read it for the drama, then read Shattered Sword for the correction. How we rate →

Historical Context

Incredible Victory (1967) narrates the June 1942 Battle of Midway largely from interviews with American and Japanese participants. Its emphasis on luck and the famous 'five minutes' has since been challenged, most thoroughly by Parshall and Tully's Shattered Sword.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Incredible Victory still accurate?
Its drama holds up, but its stress on luck and the 'fatal five minutes' has been corrected by later research, especially Shattered Sword.
Should I read it before or after Shattered Sword?
Either works, but reading Lord first for the legend and Shattered Sword second for the revision is especially rewarding.
